Going into last week’s series in St. Petersburg — the first of two in September between the Yankees and Rays that could have gone a long way to determining the A.L. East winner — the Yanks sat atop the division by a half-game. Now that all seven games have been played? The lead remains a half-game. Curtis Granderson homered twice in the opener, then Phil Hughes made his case for a spot in the postseason rotation. But the rains came on Wednesday, leading to an ineffective Chad Gaudin outing, another Broadway reference from John Sterling, and ultimately, a Yankees loss. They’d drop the finale, too, and in doing so, lose the season series to the Rays. But what happened this week that didn’t involve 760-pound monuments?
Mark Sanchez matured again versus the Patriots, but the Giants regressed in Indianapolis.
Braylon Edwards was arrested and faces DWI charges. But he’ll play Sunday — unlike the injured Darrelle Revis.
Joe Torre attended the unveiling of George Steinbrenner’s monument, then got called names by David Wells. But he won’t be hired by the Mets. Whew.
The Nuggets are reportedly willing to trade Carmelo Anthony, and Donnie Walsh wishes he had a first-round pick to offer them.
We kicked off our preseason “Better Know a Knick” series with Bill Walker and Timofey Mozgov.
And we talked with Gay Talese, sportswriter.
That’s it for us. Have a nice weekend.
