Trump Mocks Taylor Swift for Super Bowl Boos, Can’t Help But Lie

Donald Trump has a well-documented passion for lying. He lies about big things (like whether he won the 2020 election) and totally insignificant things (like his Time magazine obsession). At the moment, it feels like there are no consequences for the president’s rampant dissembling — but it did bungle what should have been a slam-dunk insult against his most famous celebrity foe, Taylor Swift.

Trump and Swift have a yearslong beef, and the pop star endorsed Kamala Harris in 2024. Both Trump and Swift attended Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, and they were both rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles (Swift is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and Trump has been making weird overtures to the team’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes).

When Trump entered Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, “he was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos from the crowd,” according to Reuters. Social-media users disagreed on how the crowd reacted later when Trump was shown on the stadium jumbotron, with some claiming he was uniformly cheered and others saying there was also significant booing.

When Swift was shown on the jumbotron, the reaction was more clearly negative. Swift seemed confused by the booing, and appeared to say, “What’s going on?”

So the reaction to Trump wasn’t purely positive. And we can surmise that the overwhelming Swift boos weren’t totally about her politics; she’s the world’s most famous Chiefs backer and the stadium was packed with Eagles fans. Nevertheless, the narrative that emerged on social media was that this was another sign of MAGA’s glorious triumph over all who dared oppose Trump.

A less petty president might have privately enjoyed this story line without commenting on it himself. But, of course, that’s not Trump’s style. During the third quarter of the game, he posted two Truth Social messages that recycled Libs of TikTok content;

Then, in case anyone didn’t get it, he posted an original insult:

The thing is, Taylor wasn’t “BOOED out of the Stadium.” There are plenty of photos of her watching the rest of the game. Guess who did leave early? President Trump. He exited the stadium about ten minutes into the second half. The casual lie just undermines an already underwhelming Truth Social taunt.

Trump clearly revels in dissing his various celebrity nemeses, but Kendrick Lamar he is not.
