Give Me Liberty! Tina Crashes Paris Review Party

Talk editor Tina Brown may be in a celebrity death-match with Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter, but she’s also found the time to challenge the folks at The Paris Review. It seems the literary journal had long planned on holding its forty-fifth-anniversary bash at Liberty Island – the same spot Tina has now chosen to celebrate the August 2 Talk launch. “I don’t know anything about a Paris Review party,” says Talk spokeswoman Hillary Bass. “But I’m terribly upset I haven’t been invited.” Paris Review editor George Plimpton, who wrote a piece for Talk’s first issue, says he sent around a memo to Brown and Harvey Weinstein back in May looking for sponsorship for TPR’s early-September festivities. “We asked them to help us with our party, you know, by buying a picnic blanket or something,” says Plimpton. Instead, when Talk’s plans for the Brooklyn Navy Yard fell through, Tina helped herself to the entire Paris Review party – and we mean everything – right down to the Glorious Food caterers and the Grucci fireworks. “We don’t quite know what to do,” sighs Plimpton. “The bloom may be off the rose with Liberty Island. Maybe we won’t do anything at all,” he says. “Or maybe we’ll go to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.”
