The White House is taking the blame for yesterday’s incident in which a 747 circling low over Manhattan and New Jersey and trailed by a military fighter jet caused panicked office workers to stream out into the streets. The plane was President Obama’s backup Air Force One, and the jet was simply taking photos of it near the Statue of Liberty, because wouldn’t that be such a pretty photo to have? It’s still unclear why the only guy in the mayor’s office that knew about it was the director of operations in the Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management, a position as high up on the chain of command as it sounds, or why police were told to keep the preplanned event a secret. Either way, Mayor Bloomberg said he was “furious” about it, and reportedly so was Obama, who wasn’t on the plane and wasn’t aware of the operation beforehand. But probably not as furious as this woman:
“I was crying and praying to God to forgive me my sins because I thought I was going to get killed,” said Kathleen Filandro, who fled from 1 New York Plaza when she spotted the planes.
That’s one person out of many who will definitely not be buying yesterday’s amazing souvenir photo from the White House gift shop.
