Donald Trump’s campaign has seen prouder days. Over the weekend, Ted Cruz out-hustled the mogul in Colorado, picking up every last delegate the Rocky Mountain State had to offer at its district and state conventions. Meanwhile, Team Trump lost five of the six delegate seats up for grabs in the third and seventh congressional districts of South Carolina — a state he won by ten points back in February. Finally, on Monday morning, Trump revealed that his ground game isn’t just inept at securing the support of state delegates — it can’t even secure the support of his own kids.
“They had a longtime register and they were, you know, unaware of the rules, and they didn’t, they didn’t register in time,” Trump told Fox & Friends, explaining that Eric and Ivanka Trump would not be voting to make America great again in New York’s April 19 primary. “So they feel very, very guilty.”
“They feel very guilty,” Trump reiterated. “But it’s fine. I understand that. I think they have to register a year in advance and they didn’t. So Eric and Ivanka, I guess, won’t be voting.” Trump went on to joke that he was considering an adjustment in Eric and Ivanka’s allowances.
New York runs a closed primary system that requires voters to register with a party well in advance of its nominating contest. This year, voters had to register as Republicans last October to be eligible to vote in next week’s primary.
Later in the interview, Trump tore into CIA director John Brennan for saying that his agency would refuse to use enhanced interrogation techniques (a.k.a. forms of torture) like waterboarding, even if the next president ordered it to do so.
“They chop off heads and drown people in cages,” Trump said of ISIS. “And we can’t waterboard. And we can’t do anything, and we’re playing on different fields.”
Trump has previously recommended that America play on the Islamic State’s field by murdering the wives and children of terrorists. On Monday, Trump suggested Obama’s refusal to pursue such measures is the reason we have yet to destroy ISIS.
“The reason we can’t beat them is we won’t use strong tactics,” Trump said. “Can you imagine these ISIS people sitting around, eating and talking about how this country won’t allow waterboarding, and they’ve just chopped off 50 heads?”
But before Trump can make the CIA war criminals again, he’ll need to develop some enhanced voter-registration techniques.
