Recent reports have suggested that Pedro Hernandez just blurted out a confession when police contacted him recently about the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz, but it seems he was actually less forthcoming. Sources tell the Daily Beast that police questioned Hernandez for more than an hour at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office before he started to incriminate himself. Per the Daily Beast:
>A detective from the NYPD missing person’s squad then set down the photo of Patz and said something to the effect of, “You know why you’re here.”
Hernandez, the source says, looked away and replied, in essence, “I’ve never seen that before.”
Refusing to humor the idea that a man who worked two blocks from where Patz disappeared wouldn’t recognize the photo seared into New Yorkers’ brains, the detective shot back, “You know you’ve seen that before.”

After a break, detectives enlisted the help of a Camden, New Jersey, cop who grew up with Hernandez and happened to be in the building. They talked about the local rumors that Hernandez had been diagnosed with HIV, and eventually he began to admit that he knew something about Patz’s disappearance.
