On Thursday, an unidentified 34-year-old man walked into Hempstead’s Peninsula Deli & Grocery to redeem a $1 million lottery ticket. But the claiming of his prize was stalled by the store’s father and son owners, Nabil and Karim Jaghab, who alternately tried to convince the non-English speaking customer that he had won only $1,000 and $10,000 and attempted to keep the ticket, the New York Post reports. When the man grew suspicious, Nabil offered him $10,000 to not call the police, but that bribe wasn’t enough for someone with a recent $1 million windfall. Now the lucky winner is going to need to find somewhere else to leave his spare keys.
