After nearly a year of waiting, the families of the passengers of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are finally eligible to claim financial settlements from the airline, following a ruling by the Malaysian government that the plane’s disappearance last March was the result of an accident. “All 239 of the passengers and crew onboard MH370 are presumed to have lost their lives,” said Malaysian civil aviation director general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman. This change in classification, though, seems to be less about establishing a verdict on what truly happened than about helping the families. A search for wreckage from the flight is ongoing, led by Malaysia, China, and Australia.
