If you’ve been worried that Republican candidates learned their lesson about saying dumb things about rape and abortion in 2012, allow Scott Walker to calm your fears. A few days ago, the Wisconsin governor described medically unnecessary pre-abortion ultrasounds, which are required by state law, as “a cool thing out there,” and on Wednesday he offered more insights into why ladies don’t mind having the government involved in their reproductive decisions.
Legislation working its way through the Wisconsin legislature would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and Walker has said he will sign it even without exceptions for rape and incest. “I mean, I think for most people who are concerned about that, it’s in the initial months where they’re most concerned about it,” the governor explained. “In this case, again, it’s an unborn life, it’s an unborn child, and that’s why we feel strongly about it. I’m prepared to sign it either way that they send it to us.”
If you can’t get your act together within 20 weeks — maybe because you’ve suffered some horrific trauma, are still in an abusive situation, or live in a state with only four abortion providers — that’s on you, ladies.
