What NBA All-Star Chris Bosh Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked former Miami Heat basketball player Chris Bosh about the Nike sneakers, Fender guitar, noise-canceling sleepbuds he can’t live without.

Those little toothpicks with the floss on them, I always have those on me. I have a thing with food getting stuck in my teeth — those things come in handy. Oral B is solid.

You know, they’re a classic. I’ve got three pairs: black and white, white and red, and blue and white. I’m a dad, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to start wearing loafers all the time. I’m a sneaker guy. But you can dress these up or down. And they’re comfortable — no-frills, nothing crazy, super-simple — you just can put them on and go. Plus they’re recognizable — they bring back memories for people.

He’s a phenomenal author, I’ve read plenty of his books. The title is kind of self-explanatory, but it’s pretty much about not running away from obstacles on the way to your goal. He talks about embracing the difficulties, because it’s an inevitable part of the process — they’re going to happen anyway, and it will actually get you closer to your goals. Our coach Erik Spoelstra actually gifted it to the team one year. I said: Yeah, coach, you’re late, I’ve read it already. It’s not a crazy thick book, but it’s great food for thought. The standpoint is just, like, Hey, you know, get these problems out of the way so you can get to your goals.

A good friend of mine gave me these. I didn’t know what they were at first. Now I pretty much sleep with them every night. It has this gentle alarm that doesn’t startle me out of my sleep. And it won’t wake up my wife. Essentially you and your partner can have different wake-up times, that’s my favorite feature. And I have a lot of kids, so on Saturdays and Sundays when I want to sleep in, you can turn the noise-canceling function all the way up, and they won’t wake you up at 6 a.m.

So my wife got me into scents and smells and all those things. It’s one of those things that you don’t know how much you’re going to enjoy until you have it … until the room consistently smells good because there’s this mist all around. When people walk in the room, they’re like, Damn, that smells amazing. I’m like, That’s my mister, bro. For men, we usually we think of scents as Glade or potpourri, but now I’m into sandalwood.

So I love playing guitar. I started four years ago — the first time I had my little health situation when I couldn’t play basketball. So I went into just playing the guitar and learning music. Fender has classic models: the Stratocaster, that’s probably the easiest one to recognize, the Jazzmaster. But my favorite is the Redondo. Fender’s one of those companies that’s been around forever: It’s good quality, it’s going to sound good. You definitely feel that when you get one of their guitars, they’re not cheap.

You can put this right in your bag — it’s not big, it’s not bulky. It has a lot of options on the keyboard control. When you go smaller, you typically lose a lot of those features. The best part is it’s not that expensive. It’s probably like a foot and a half long. If you have a backpack, it can fit in there for sure.

As you can tell, I love music. This audio interface is so small and easy to travel with — that’s one of the problems with music production, the bulkiness of some products. If you’re traveling with a guitar, you don’t have to have some big rig behind you, you can just plug into your computer and it works seamlessly. If I’m on the road and hanging with my musician friends, I can just plug it in and we can record right there.

You know what, one of my biggest things is — I’m grown now, I’m a grown-up, and I like to look stylish wherever I go. I’m also an athlete, so I’m used to traveling with duffle bags. But after a while having an old sweaty gym bag, that gets tiring if you travel a lot, which I do quite a bit. It’s a difficult time to really pay attention to what you’re wearing and feel stylish at the same time. This bag makes me feel put together.

I’m in a bourbon period, and it can get pricey. But this stuff is not crazy expensive. You know, bourbon can get real smoky and leathery, and it can chase people off. But this one is nice and smooth and good for a tasting —not too complex for people’s palates.

A couple of these things are things I always aspired to get, those material things that you want to get when you’re successful. Rolex was one of those. I remember watching Wimbledon a kid, there was always that Rolex sign in the back. And then when you go to certain parts of town and see successful people with those watches, you’re like, Wow, that’s a mighty fine timepiece that guy has there. So I finally purchased one for me and my very best friend a couple Christmases ago.

One of the brands that I really like, and that you can still classify as a craft beer, is Dogfish Head. The CEO is a good friend, we did a collaboration. We made some beer together. They just have really good beer. The 60 Minute IPA makes it harder to drink other IPAs.
