What Orville Peck Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like hair spray or an electric toothbrush. We asked Orville Peck — whose album Stampede came out earlier this month — about the chapstick, plant-identification app, and cowboy-boot-removal tool he can’t live without.

I’ve always had big dry lips my whole life, even when I was a kid, and so I have to always have chapstick. Aquaphor is the only one that works. Aquaphor, if you’re listening, please send me a lot.

I’ve been journaling since I was 9 years old, probably. I buy blank, lined, just wholesale journals. Every day I wake up and I journal probably for at least an hour. It’s usually just getting things off my chest or writing about whatever’s coming to mind. It could also be writing lyrics — it’s all over the place. I use the Pilot Extra Fine Ink pens and I use ’em in different colors to keep it interesting.

I have a few different kinds of this sort of mule without the back — I do those pretty much exclusively. I have a green pair that’s got green fur inside. I have this really cool pair from King Kennedy, where each one is made out of vintage Persian rugs. So they’re all one of a kind. And then the classic Birkenstocks, the cross-the-top sandal-type ones, just the O.G. kind of tan color. I wear cowboy boots for a living, so when I’m not wearing cowboy boots, I want to be in the most comfortable shoes possible.

I’ve been doing film photography since I was a kid. I try to just capture candid moments of the band backstage, on the bus, or when we’re out doing fun stuff. Whenever I remember, I try to take a picture because I feel like when you take photos on your phone, you end up never even looking at them. And so I really like taking film photos and going and getting them developed, and they always turn out way nicer.

Having a bootjack is very essential to me. I use a Lucchese one that Post Malone gifted me, actually. It’s a tool to take your cowboy boots off without sort of having to sit down and struggle with them. And that, first of all, is a pain in the ass, but also it kind of messes up your boots eventually. So a boot jack is this wooden thing that almost looks like a horseshoe, and you put one foot on the base of it, then you put your heel of your other foot into the horseshoe part, and you pull your foot up and your foot just slides right out of the boot. It sounds pedantic, but honestly it is one of my favorite inventions in the world because when I don’t have one, sometimes I have to get someone to help pull my cowboy boots off my feet.

I’ve always loved gardening. My mother’s a huge gardener, and I’ve always been obsessed with plants and flowers and trees and everyone always makes fun of me. We’ll be on vacation somewhere or driving around and I’ll be like, “Oh my God, look at that tree.” And everyone’s like, “Huh, what?” We’ll be walking to go get coffee and everyone’s miles ahead of me because I’m standing by a flower trying to figure out what it is. With this app, you can take a photo of any leaf or flower and it identifies it and tells you all about what the species is, which I like to nerd out about. Mexico is one of my favorite places because there’s a lot of really cool tropical plants that I’m not familiar with. I grew up in South Africa, which has a lot of tropicals, but they’re different types.

I really like playing this Switch game called Stardew Valley, where you basically are a farmer and you interact with town people. It’s really cute and just easy to turn your brain off. On the tour bus we also play a lot of Mario Kart — my go-to character is Shy Guy, of course.
