What Jason Derulo Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Jason Derulo — who recently partnered with spirits brand Bedlam Vodka  about the tea, deodorant, and toothpaste he can’t live without.

This tea coats your vocal chords. I drink it once or twice a day. After I’ve been on tour for a while, my voice gets fatigued — just a laugh or a sneeze could mean a really, really difficult show. So the more that I’m able to ease and comfort my throat, the better. A lot of people think that you should put lemon or lime in tea to coat the throat, but that’s actually the worst thing you can do. It’s kind of like putting citrus on a cut. If your vocal chords are stressed, citrus just makes it worse.

I like the original. I’ve used it for seven or eight years, at least. Sometimes I work out twice a day, and they say your body still burns calories hours after a workout, right? So throughout the day, my body’s really active. I’m always on the go, so I’ve got to stay fresh.

I grew up playing basketball. After I didn’t make the team in ninth grade, I spent every waking moment practicing until I made the team and became the best person on it. We went on to win a state championship. I still play often, and I like a classic Spalding basketball.

If I can’t have coffee in the morning, I will literally try to stay in bed. Coffee helps me kickstart my day, gets me up and going, and I feel like it makes me a lot more useful. In quarantine, I realized that I needed to put a coffee maker in my bedroom so I could be more productive. So I now have a Nespresso in my kitchen and one in my bedroom.

I think people can get a little too fancy with toothpaste. Colgate is classic, and gets the job done. It’s what I’ve always used. I’ve tried others, especially in college when I just wanted the cheapest option. But nothing can match up to Colgate.

I would always go to a gym, but the pandemic changed that. I needed a gym at home — but one I’d actually use, because I’ve had home gyms before and never used them. I got this for my new home gym and it has been a huge outlet for me. I’m able to let off steam and I feel like working out helps me be the best version of myself.

Thriller was the first album I ever bought. Michael is the sole reason that I started singing and dancing. He was my biggest influence growing up. I studied it every single day — I was mimicking that album. I’ve listened to it at least 1,000 times.

Being on the road all the time, I had to build a studio that could be nimble and move around wherever I go. This helps me make any hotel room more like a studio. I can make a ton of music with it while I am on the road. It’s my favorite thing to do.

I wanted to do a spirits line for the longest time. I tasted Bedlam when it was on the set of one of my music videos, and I was like, “Damn, this is so good!” From there, it became my favorite vodka, and I always asked them to send me dozens of cases because I love it so much. The relationship just continued to grow from there. I always try to lead with being authentic; leading with the things that I love has always been more successful. A lot of people will drink it on ice, without a chaser, because they don’t want to ruin the taste. It’s just so explosive — it has a really bold, crisp taste and doesn’t have that same burn that other vodkas do. I do a vodka soda, splash of tonic. That’s my go-to.
