If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like hair spray or an electric toothbrush. We asked Christian Siriano — who recently designed two jewelry collections for Zales — about the markers, boots, and hair spray he can’t live without.
I have now found these to be probably the most comfortable boots that I’ve ever worn, ever. I really believe that. Working in the studio every single day, that was really important because I don’t sit down. I just discovered them; I’ve been wearing them for maybe only a year. They’re really moldable. I like that they’re so lightweight that I don’t feel like I’m wearing a big chunky boot. I like that look, but these are very, very light. I love my Prada boots, but they’re heavy. This is my go-to that I can just wear every day. I’m a creature of habit in my clothes. When you’re a designer and you make clothes all day, I like a uniform: a black tee, black jeans, my boots, and that’s it. It’s hard because I get sick of clothes.
I always have my little TRESemmé mini Extra Hold hair spray. I have it in every single bag, ready to go. That’s just been my signature go-to product because I’m always doing something: I’m always on, I’m always at an event, I’m always at a project, I’m always at a shoot or a fitting, and I feel like it’s something that, just for my own confidence, makes me feel good. And it is the best hair spray. Whatever anybody says, I don’t care. It lasts all day long and it’s great. TRESemmé figured it out. I think I’ve been using this hair spray probably since 2008, for real.
This is something that I probably wear to all my events. I bought this really beautiful black vintage wool Saint Laurent blazer that I’ve worn to the Emmys, to Vanity Fair. I think I’ve worn it on multiple talk shows. I’ve probably had it for six years now, and it’s just a classic. It’s very simple, wool, but it’s just something that makes me feel good and confident, and that’s why I go to it.
The taste, though. Listen, I like the thin. I like the crunch. I feel like I’m not eating a very fattening chocolate-chip cookie, so I guess that’s why I go to it. But I just realized that I have it in all my houses. I was just visiting my mom, and my mom even started to buy them now for me when I come home, which is just really cute.
I bought a beautiful Hermès blanket recently, and now it’s become my favorite thing. I’ve had beautiful cashmere blankets over the years, but I really liked the print and the texture of this one. I wanted something that was classic to have in my home. Obviously, I do a lot of interior design and felt like this was something that I really needed and something that we can actually use when we sit and watch TV every night. It’s nice. It’s almost patchworklike, but graphic and cream and beige. My house in West Florida is very, very neutral; it’s very Zen-like. I try to come home from all the craziness to a calm place.
I use a very inexpensive moisturizer, L’Oréal’s Revitalift, and I actually just really, really love the smell. I’ve been using this for three or four years. I like old-school classics. I love a beautiful, expensive brand, too, but I always went to these brands growing up. My mom taught me that.
I use two markers. I use a black Sharpie and a Chartpak marker, and I literally have been using them my entire career. They’re incredible. I still sketch every single piece that we make by hand. I actually do use these every day. I use Strathmore’s Bristol pad, which I’ve been using for 15 years.
We’re so excited to have done this. It’s my first fine-jewelry venture ever, which is really funny because I’ve been in the red-carpet business for so long and I’ve always used other people’s jewelry. It’s really nice that I finally get to design my own that we can use. I think we have such a great price point and for really such a diverse group of people. It’s very size inclusive, which was really important. I think it’s really beautiful and wearable and still elegant, but accessible. I love my little black and white diamond cross necklace, and I am also really into this necklace of two interlocking circles, one with diamonds, one with enamel. I really love that piece. What was great is we actually dipped into my archive, in a way, when designing this collection. We went back and looked at a lot of clothes and colors and shapes, and we tried to do some things that felt like twisted ruffles or layering. That’s why a lot of pieces are black and gold or enamel, because I do a lot of color-block things, but they also feel romantic so you get the best of both worlds.
